Direct Payments are payments made to you if you are eligible for care and support or to the person you are looking after if they are eligible for care and support, instead of your Council arranging it for you.
You can choose to have all or part of your Personal Budget as a Direct Payment. This allows you to purchase your own support including home care, day care and respite.
Direct payments are designed to give you more flexibility in how your services are provided by providing you with money rather than social care services.
Using a Direct Payments will give you choice and control – you can employ your own carers and/or use the agency of your choice. This means you are in control of how and when you get the help and support you need.
How do I get a Direct Payment?
Before you can receive a Direct Payment a Social Care assessment will be carried out to find out whether you are eligible for Social Care and, if so, what areas of care and support you need.
This assessment will cover areas such as:
- Your personal care needs
- Daily living
- Keeping safe
- Your social life
Your Care Manager/Social Worker will help you to complete a Support Plan although you can complete this yourself if you prefer.
Your Support Plan will include what outcomes you wish to achieve, how you wish to achieve them and at what cost.
When your Support Plan is agreed by a social care professional, you will be told how much you will receive as your Personal Budget.
